...in the multiplexes?
I don't think I've ever seen it this bad.
While Guardians of the Galaxy is a fun ride, given the competition, it's no wonder it keeps topping the box office.
Hopefully the fall releases shooting for Oscars will be a big improvement.
Follow Ups:
...almost nothing of interest even at the art house theaters.
...which I wanted to see and thought looked great in trailers only got picked up by a few theaters and came and went in a flash.
Sorry I missed it.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
the actor wasn't 1) short enough 2) wasn't ugly enough.
A lot of it was filmed right here and I didn't realize it until some exteriors popped up. That means it was a pretty low budget despite the cast.
blame it on box-office numbers
Blame it on sources of funding -- desire and fear on the part of investors. Desire to turn a profit on the original investment. Fear of not turning a profit. Wherever the money is, that's where the movies go.
We now seem to be living in a world largely controlled by 'bean counters'. Not just movies. Every aspect of life. Your job for instance. Has your company recently been purchased by an "investment group"!
I say it out loud. We are being run by the investment bankers of this world ..... and their stock holders.
1) And these are not necessarily honest professionals. Only the type interested in a near term profit.
2) stock holders (innocent folks) that depend on dividends to supplement their retirement.
To know the answer why everything is as it is today, just follow the money.

PS: we will all be assimilated.
Personally, I think the most exciting storytelling is happening on TV with shows like True Detective, Breaking Bad, Scandal, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards...
Cinema is like Haiku. Roughly two hours to tell a story. How many great novels have been mangled to bits by the format? Maybe that's why there are so many multipart movies and sequels coming out these days.
I'm not disparaging the many great movies that have been made.. Just saying, there may be more creativity happening within the greater storytelling freedom of the TV format right now.

This weekend, The Identical. Things are bad for theater hounds like me.
...said that one sucked.
mesmerized by the topic. Ho hum.
I seem to remember a day when the choices were something like:
"Swamp Thing" "Cyborg" "Tequila Sunrise" "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" or "Road House"
...if I recall, Swamp Thing was pretty campy and it featured the very talented Adrienne Barbeau.
Road House is one of my favorite guilty pleasures.
If only the films in the multiplex today were as good.
It was passable. I DO agree, however, about Adrienne Barbeau's two great talents.
Also agree with Willy, the lineup at the big box cinemas absolutely is sucking right about now. Heck, I even went to see The Giver two weeks ago.
