I just called to complain that half my queue is short wait or long wait.
They told me people break or don't return discs.
Really? After eleven years of being a customer all of a sudden people aren't returning discs?
I'd say they are getting ready to exit the disc rental business. I'd be surprised it they announcement doesn't come in the next 12 months.

I left Netflix back when they split the streaming & DVD by mail business ... then they said "we'll never mind" ... but I was already gone.I tried the 30 day free streaming once since then ... didn't think it was worth it so I never became a paying subscriber again.
Netflix was cool when it 1st started but I have no interest in them anymore.

To me, this is like going to some good restaurant, paying $50 for a good dinner, then endlessly complaining that you were not served chateau Lafite. The fact you got a very good $50 dinner is apparently not fair enough.
Netflix is like good... sometimes - VERY good restaurant... it provides, in my view, more than good service for its price.
So say "Thank you!" for that, and take the rest of your money elsewhere - buy your BD's on line, if you wish.
Me... I certainly find more than plenty of films worth watching there. Many more, in fact, than my $8 would buy anywhere else.
Actually the money had nothing to do with it. It's always been dirt cheap to me.The problem I had with them was that ... IMHO ... they were more interested in the streaming side of the business than the DVD side.
Initially I joined Netflix (in the early years) because they had DVDs
available that I could not find at my local Hollywood Video or Blockbuster.Always had a fear that once Netflix killed off the video stores they would revert to the same ... "cater to the masses" attitude ... that was typical of most video stores. I've always assumed that they would stream what is popular ... new releases ... movies catering to younger tastes ... etc. It's the most economically sensible business model. But it's not one that I am interested in.

Anyway when I left Netflix ... I joined Blockbuster online ... was good for while but then the waiting lists and mail time got longer and longer ... so I quit them too.
By that time both Hollywood & Blockbuster Video stores had closed in my Town.
Now I just get movies from the Library (online ordering transferred from any Library in my state) or from a local Drug Store that still rents new releases for couple of dollars.
As far a streaming ... I am a Hulu Plus subscriber ... initially joined to gain access to the Criterion Collection but I also watch a lot of TV series ... was not planing that but that's how it's worked out.

I had several cases when it said Long Wait, but the disc showed up in a couple of days.
Plus... if they move 100% to streaming, I will be totally happy!
Disc are such an anachronism! Older than abstinence.
I actually like Netflix - for the most part - and consider their catalog to be pretty extensive They don't have everything, but I've managed to fill up my queue with a couple hundred films, many of which are quite obscure and difficult to find. They also get most of the Criterion releases, and keep up quite well IMHO with other stuff.
Streaming is fine, and I realize it is the wave of the future, but I still think it's a jump to call discs a complete anachronism for a variety of reasons.
For starters...no broad band internet - no movie for you. Internet is also prone to choked bandwidth, outages, internal problems with your own equipment, etc. Also, for those with a projector and/or large screen this can be an issue. I have tried a couple different streaming services on my 110" screen and it was VERY lacking in comparison to a Blu-ray disc. This is actually the main reason that I do not look forward to things moving to exclusively streaming.
Aside from the video quality, there is the issue of streaming lacking the full hi-res audio that Blu-ray is capable of - not to mention lack of even surround sound in many cases.
There is also the issue of extras that are part of the DVD/Blu Ray package. This is absent with streaming.
I am also highly suspect that the entire back catalog will become available.

Did he write angry stories about the Amazon, the iTunes, the local store, the library?
I truly don't know where some folks come from, and why they feel business are in business of making them happy... no matter what their desires.
Sorry guys... the business are in business of making money. If in process they make you feel good - great... if not - sorry, buddy... try the guy next door! :)

You seem to always willing to cut them a break. You are mistaken if you think everything will ever be available to stream. Where have you been? Business always ends up giving you less for more. Denial is not a river in Egypt.

Total and pure hogwash.Look at the prices of flat panel TV's, just as one example of what business gives you. What used to cost $10K now is available for $600.
Such examples are everywhere, Mr. Revolutionary! :)
And BTW... speaking of business... Best Buy just put the plasma we bought three weeks ago on sale.
Today they gave us a $600 credit just for asking.
That horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible business practice!

Yawn! One day you'll see that isn't "more". On second thought your ilk will never figure that out. Just like you think what a great deal now on a given product that costs less than it did. ALL new products cost more when they are first released like plasma TV's . I know I started selling them in 1999.When LCD monitors came out we all knew it was a matter of time before they were less than $100. Compared to small(er) LCD TV's LCD monitors are a ripoff still today. We all new when they were made in more than just one plant and when the build efficiency increased and you could buy them anywhere the price would lower Einstein. You let me know when existing long time things like food, wine, ANYTHING on a subscription service like Netflix, Cable SAT TV get cheaper. The only things that will are things like cell phone service and perhaps Internet where we in the USA pay much more for less quality than most anywhere on the planet. Victor there is either "room" in the gross margin or there isn't. I have no idea why I wasted my time trying to teach you reality.

you're now pretty much out of luck, unless it's older films (which I've invariably seen).
If you go through lists of "best foreign films" of the past five years, Netflix has ignored them, opting only to carry a few of the Oscar nominees.
After I exhausted the foreign offerings, I amused myself for some time w/noir films, but after the top 50 (Netflix has a surprisingly good collection of those), I had nothing.
Streaming indeed sucks, too, because it offers almost NO new films from other countries. It's really a for-tv service.
Vudu has some options, but who wants to pay 5 bucks to watch something once? I do, occasionally, but it's not a long term strategy. And… it doesn't have much in the foreign realm, either.
Many of these films are for sale. Perhaps some of us could start our own Netflix type of sharing club?
I suspect the films, now only available on discs, will gradually become streamable - call me a dreamer.
I doubt Netflix will simply discontinue the discs, in fact, diminishing their library.
Which brings another point - anyone has any idea how they decide which films to stream?
streaming, it's become less interested in "hard copy." And it buys very, very few foreign titles.
Truly, the waiting periods have become common for all but the most popular foreign titles; viewers increase, titles don't. They make VASTLY more money from streaming. At this point, they probably continue DVDs as a loss leader. At any rate, I have a massive list of films I compiled from cross-indexing "best of" film lists for five or six years. It is exceptionally rare to find one on Netflix. Even pretty well-known films are ignored. The "Save" feature is a waste of time; films on my list never are offered.
As you can see from this very forum, made-for-cable is the replacement for film. MP3 has its new corollary.

I don't disagree that like in many other fields, the business model that favors the mediocrity will eventually win, so perhaps you just had too high expectations for them.
They are not an art house, that is clear, but they still have quite a few interesting films.
...
Still, I would like to be a fly on the wall, and find out how they make all those decisions. Do they have to jump through hurdles to make a film streamable? Is there an extra royalty they have to pay?
I think most of us would be willing to pay a couple more bucks a month for wider streaming selection.
Why bother with all that mailing-shmailing, when you can do painless streaming? It IS the way of the future, I have no doubt about it, I just hope it is brighter, rather than dimmer.
