More dismal pre/post Apocalypse crap from the boys from Johannesburg. This time crime is out of control and automated robots help police up the streets and slums. Unit #22 is damaged in a fire fight and is slated for salvage until Dev Patel (who has far outlived his stardom) saves him and programs him with his AI software that gives him all the human attributes both police and criminals lack.Chappie is hijacked with Patel by a small gang with big plans. (Two of the gang members are high-profile SA pop, rap stars using their real names.) They teach Chappie to become a criminal and he begins to assist them in crimes despite Patel's best efforts to intervene.
Right before midpoint I was ready to hit the bricks but after midpoint things began to pick up and much action ensued. Not enough to save the film, mind you.
Sigourney and Jackman cameo'd in and out of the story which had a few laughs and excellent CGI.
Stream or rent if you must. The dreariness of SA drags me down.

...his new films as "...from the man who brought you District 9".
District 9 was quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
District 9 had at least four or five minutes that were really good.
They were mostly in the preview, though.

clearly as the best reviewer on the internet claims at about the 7 minute mark.
Hugh Jackman was way over the top and Sigourney Weaver was just a stand in part, no gravitas.
I am still glad I saw it for some good action and some of the silly scenes were fun.
Not a big fan of Neill Blomkamp either, he kind of reminds me of a creepy and dirty Luc Besson.
...gave it a B- and said it had enough heart to carry it.

After having seen District 9 and then Elysium then your comments..
it seems there is a signature style from this director that really doesn't work for me either.

A young director with a certain style of vision. Ugliness magnified in the bright and harsh mid-afternoon light.
With all the hype surrounding District 9, I definitely had to see that one. Bought the BR. Played once. Perhaps I'll refer to it once in a great while...but not for pleasure.
As for Chappie, I know I'll have to see it, but I also know I can wait until it is out on cable and available for viewing free with subscription...
I don't know the box office numbers yet, but perhaps, with this one, there will be a short time period between theaters to disk... and then an even shorter period from disk to cable.
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting here.
-Steve
At this time "Chappie" is projected to do~ $13m in weekend box office in NA. Total weekend box office is projected to be down ~ 30% compared to same time last year. Pretty dismal on both counts.
