I really don't have a favorite I watch them all when ever I can, his worst movie is better than most directors best. A must read is Hitchcock/Truffaut you will gain so much insight into his work you will never view his movies the same as before.

"Familiarity breeds contempt, and children."

Such a great actors film. So many themes taking place all in the restricted confines of a small lifeboat.
thou I have yet to see it
fairly creepy and very "Hithcockian" with the shots and structure, even that early on.
Saw it at the Castro Theater many years ago, with live musical accompaniment.
Highly recommended!

btw I am jealous - good going!
1. Vertigo
2. The Birds
3. Dial M For Murder
but for #1.I'd substitute Rebecca, Rope or Notorious for Vertigo.
Personally I think it's easily his most stilted, over rated film and has terrible performances by all.
I'd even choose The Birds over it.
Vertigo is equally as hokey but in a completely different way.

and Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite actors!
The whole thing has always struck me as phony, but I'm definitely in the minority and can live with that.
Rope has some faults because of how it was devised, but its strengths lay there as well as in a play. A live audience would have taken it up a notch. The undertones of relationships and interactions of the characters drive it, and it's as much of a psychological mindfook as Hitchcock did, peppered with some of the most "average", boring people one can imagine. You see and read every day about crimes still performed by guys with the sense of entitlement that the main protagonists displayed like peacock feathers.
Rope is NOT a film of suspense; that dead body is possibly Hichcock's greatest Mcguffin!

Highly underrated in my opinion.
