I somehow missed this one. Maybe the best post Cold War le Carré adaptation? And a surprisingly strong performance for a dead guy from Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Which is too bad because it was brilliant IMO. Hoffman was clearly in a deteriorated state at that time, but he used his condition as part of his character. As Billy said, you could really feel his anger and humiliation in the end. He was played again, like he was before, as he said a couple of times in the film. He was guarded against it happening again, yet didn't see it coming -- again.
You were left with the sense that he would be looking for another line of work.
