Most small planes have glide ratio of 9 or 10, and will not tumble until their speed drops below 50 knots or so, so they CAN glide.
True. Flying with the engine off is a basic part of flight training, on what are probably the cheapest of private planes. If a beginner can do it, it's gotta be a more serious situation to catch an experienced person.

I don't see why more don't glide and make some sort of relatively soft landing.
...because they often experience engine problems at low altitude and speed. Especially critical on take off, there you really don't have much room.
A big plane has the same issue, remember the DC-10 crash on takeoff in Chicago, back in 79? At the point where they lost one engine, there was nothing they could do.
