Spotlight just showed up here in limited release. This is a tight, beautifully edited and acted, investigative thriller. The story is successfully told in the style of All The President Men. Warning, Basic (not detailed) plot spoilers follow:This is the story of a group of journalists, assigned to the the Boston Globe's "spotlight" investigative team, who, under the direction of a new managing editor, peel back the layers of the onion exposing the rotten core lying inside.
Managing(?) editor is played perfectly by Liev Schreiber, a serious man of few words who's new on the job and anxious to steer the Spotlight away from traditional political corruption investigations onto what he thinks is the more fertile ground of possible pedophile abuse by Boston priests. Investigate away they do.
The reporters are played by Mark Rufallo in one of his best performances (not a fan of his usually but great here), Rachel McAdams, playng the female on the team adequately, and Brian D'arcy James. Excellent supporting performances turned in by their boss, Michael Keaton, John Slattery, well cast as editor Ben Bradlee Jr., an almost unrecognizable Stanley Tucci as an always busy don't have time for you plaintiffs' lawyer, Billy Crudup as the slippery asst. D.A. who seems to know a whole lot more than he's letting on, and a host of others.
The movie does a great job of believably compressing what must have been 6-9 months of investigation into its 2h8m running time. Highly recommended and it may well be the best of the big releases that have been out since early fall.

...excellent film, very good performances, be hearing more about it at Academy Awards time.My wife's parents in Philly were the first serious Catholics I knew, in the early 1980s - her father went to Mass numerous times during the week and whenever she or any of her 7 brothers or sisters were home, they went to Mass on Sunday. She went to Catholic school all the way through college.
The film was a little depressing since it was all true and the Cardinal responsible for the cover-up in Boston was promoted when it came out - when he should have been in jail.
There is a statistic that 6% of the Catholic Priests worldwide were child molesters - that's one out of every 16.
They preyed on the poor, fatherless and vulnerable young kids.

That should have been a disclaimer on the end credits. This was a powerful film based on the reporting of the Boston Globe concerning systemic, church-wide suppression of child molestation in the Boston Diocese. I found it EDUCATIONAL and hard hitting in disclosing the staggering numbers of priests involved in child abuse who have been protected and kept in service of the church. This was a cavalcade of great talent spread across the screen with Keaton, Ruffalo, and Tucci having the most pertinent screen time. There is nothing bad about this film other than having to pay keen attention to all the names that come into play. That is staggering in itself.
Knowing the Hollywood demographic I can easily see this showing up in the Best Picture voting. This isn't an entertainment as much as it seems to be an education.
Catholics need to have a really thick skin for this one.
Lotsa hair pieces!
