A Netflix Marvel series not unlike DareDavil. This one is not really a superhero story but almost more of a horror story with a psychological study. The feel is detective noir like Raymond Chandlerish with a snarky, hard drinking protagonist trying to escape her past but with a gender flip.
The show is shepherded by a woman, Melissa Rosenberg, which gives the show a very different feel. Jessica Jones is played by Krysten Ritter late of Veronica Mars, Breaking Bad and Don't Trust the B--- in Apt 23 who is perfect for this role. Playing a hard drinking cynical woman who has all but given up due to her history especially some time ago when she was in the grips of a villain, Kilgrave.
Kilgrave is played by David Tenant and he is perfect. This is one of the best portraits of a villain in one of these shows ever. He has a superpower of being able to control anyone he comes in contact which forces them to gladly obey any whim no matter how evil or self-destructive. This guy has an incredible power and yet he is purely selfish and mundane, using the power only for his own comfort and not caring about the consequences to anyone else. Terrifying because he is only all too real.
Jessica Jones has super strength but not the sort that makes her a superhero. She has a B or C level power but is completely undone by Kilgrave's A level power. She believes him dead but suffers PTSD as a victim of months of degradation, rape and misuse by this man who used her as his toy.
Kilgrave can use anyone as a spy or murderer so Jessica, as she realizes he is not dead is frightened out of her wits and can't trust anyone. The series moves as others in her universe try to draw her out of her self-loathing for what she did while under his control. Even though she knows she couldn't stop herself, she feels guilt as do others who were similarly used. But everyone else won't believe that this is possible.
A really different hero story as Jessica Jones has to fight against people who are controlled and she doesn't hit them as much as pushes them out of the way. She cares about their lives and health and they are all defenses for Kilgrave who can use anyone against her or as a distraction.
The story ramps up as the episodes fly by. This show doesn't pass over the wreckage of this use on people unlike superhero movies that don't bother with the impact of destruction on normal people.
I highly recommend it.
Follow Ups:
Here is a Forbes' review of Jessica Jones much more in my line of thinking about this show.
One quote: "I can't fathom anyone watched this show and didn't recognize it as at least one of the best series today, regardless of whether it's to their personal taste."
I think it is the worst show I have seen in many years.

I completely disagree with you.
Many people can't take the gender flip in the case.
I know it is on a lot of top 10 lists.

That is great recommendation.
The show is simply awful.

And continuing to repeat your one note review doesn't provide any discussion fodder. Use your words.

Nothing spectacular there.

I am giving it a chance... it is a reasonable plug for some spare time.

I was resisting all that super-duper-puper stuff...Is it in any way similar to Under the Skin?

I didn't see Under the Skin though looking at the subject matter, it doesn't look anything like this. I did a broad sketch of the series without much in spoilers. Its much more noir than superhero stories are typically.
The people who don't like it just can't stand Jessica Jone's character as she is hard and sarcastic and pushes people away. My own opinion is that people have trouble with the gender shift and can't see the issues underlying this show which have a great deal to do with abuse. I had no trouble with the main character and almost all supporting which I felt were very well done.
Basically a show about a small time "gifted" person just trying to keep to herself in a small neighborhood and gets drawn into awfulness because of crap luck. She's not really a superhero at all.
otherwise JJ is fairly disturbing for me which is what they were going for and they succeeded.
Nothing really compares to Under the Skin which is slow and arty to the extreme but the images and story stay with you, just a bit of a tough viewing experience.
the villian sets this one apart and the mind games he pulls to get his way is a bit creepy and unnerving.
I really enjoyed "Under the Skin" (as much as it could be 'enjoyed') and this TV series is half as good but more unique than most imo.
As I've stated before, this is not standard super hero stuff at all. People who go in thinking that is what this is will be disappointed.
It's been sitting in my queue.

you might find it watchable, I do.
Strained to finish the first episode, and not sure at this point if will watch the second.

Its a slow burn. Takes a while and builds.
Aren't you the guy who pushes slow complicated movies?
Feeling like I could leave it at any time and not look back.

Second? WTF?
You're starting to get on my nerve...

I had no idea what to expect and have been pleasantly surprised. Not perfect, with a few instances of the really bad decision making typical in comic based stories, but clearly worth the time.
I don't disagree at all. There are about 4 or 5 wrong turns just to drive the plot but that is probably still under par for the course. In any event the story telling and characterizations overcome any such difficulty.
