I missed all the marketing for this one so for me at least, it was entirely out of left field. Mostly the interaction of 3 personalities in confined quarters with not a whole lot of action but much tension even in the quieter scenes. John Goodman's character was the center of everything and is pretty creepy. What action there is is well placed and serves the plot.
Speaking of the plot; it seems to have been well guarded prior to release because I had no idea what to expect going in (read/heard none of today's reviews prior to viewing). I thought I had it all figured out about 20 minutes in. It seemed to be a mashup of stuff we've all seen before like "Panic Room" and "Sucker Punch" with a little apocalyptic scifi thrown in as seasoning. I was wrong. Between the tension and the somewhat unexpected end, I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. Closing scene prepares us for a sequel.
Interestingly, Cloverdale has been released in both conventional 2D and IMAX 2D. I saw the conventional version and can't imagine much visual improvement from the IMAX version. OTOH, 12KW of IMAX sound could enhance some of the tension climaxes. Overall, good weekend popcorn movie. Interesting score too. 3.75/5
Follow Ups:
...very suspenseful, great music, good acting and it keeps you guessing.
Very well done.
I thought Goodman was excellent. The creepiest part to me- after Howard kills Emmett he reappears clean-shaven hovering over Michelle. Yuck!
All that said - Michelle transforming into a super-hero was unsatisfying and the Molotov cocktail into the mouth of the beast has been done too many times- War of the Worlds remake -Independence Day etc etc

as the reviewers. They all gave it a Rotten Yak.
My wife and I both throughly enjoyed it.
based on the posts below mine I'm fairly sure I have what I need to know about this film. I saw the RT page for it.
I have the dvd of the 2008 Cloverfield movie. (rarely if only once played)
My guess; the thing that makes this film work for many probably won't pull me in. I'll wait for a small screen viewing at lower cost...
but probably, this is not my cup of tea.

This was almost like a dud Steven King production. A lot of thrashing about then a nothing ending. I haven't seen the rotten tamaters rating but this thing was nearly a turkey. Winstead did an excellent job and Goodman was pretty good but the script and plot just didn't deliver for me.SPOILER:
When Winstead finally got free the invaders didn't even resemble the original Cloverfield critters. Looks like they took the cheap way out.

...somewhat higher than I would rate it or expect from critics......but not a dud. Vive la différence

sequel to Cloverfield of 2008. I guess I need to be prepared to get all buggy for this one, too.
...nicely done and entertaining. Not sure it warrants a second viewing due to lack of surprise elements.
...it's all about tone.
