Crowe looked awful, Gosling tried desperately to create his character, and former knockout Bassinger looked like a '62 Cadillac covered with Bondo. Not an appealing cast for a movie that seems to be in two parts.
Gosling is a bottom feeding PI trying to make a living for him and his super cute daughter (Angourie Rice). After getting punched out by Crowe, Gosling cuts him in on a missing person case that involves porno and mistaken identities. We go through some rough and tumble action in this too long buddy movie. After lots of dead ends and ridiculous red herrings we finally get to the crux of the matter: Detroit controls everything (in the '70's).
Rice give the best performance of the cast. She's going to be a comer. Why does so much talent come from Australia and Canada? (Are they bored and play make believe all the time?)
I'm not as high as some of the ratings but is that any news? I guess I'm glad to have seen it but have zero interest to see it again. If you are bored, go ahead. If not, cable is fine.

...amusing, entertaining and pretty funny in spots.
1970's LA was a great backdrop.
They were pretty good together so I suspect a sequel.
I'd give it a C+ because of the "child abuse".
over the top and silly but engaging just the same imo
...so it was easy to be satisfied. It was fast paced enough to hold attention, easy to follow plot and appropriately silly. Great mid 70s vibe too. And yes, something was wrong with Bassinger. Almost as if they did some form of motion capture with an extra and digitally edited in her image...at times in an uncanny valley manner. Didn't stay for credits so I don't know if they offer any clues as to what was going on.

last night for the first time since it was released.
Certainly nothing wrong with Bassinger there.
Nor with Barbara Carrera for that matter.

"E Burres Stigano?"
...like she had a little too much face work and make-up.

I asked before if Gosling and Crowe were comedy types because I can't figure it without seeing it. Gosling's rise in films is a mystery to me. He's a flatliner. I have him filed with Adam Sandler in the ?? folder. Crowe is in the telephone directory.
don't think it much matters what he does or doesn't do.
Not yet.
