A new, fully diversified, re-imagining of the Technicolor classic featuring a good cast, a good script, and all the action you could want in one helping.
The opening sequence has the assembled townsfolk in church discussing their plight caused by "Bogue" (Sargaard) who gives an excellent indictment of both God and capitalism in a most self-serving way. Once he has them terrified he empties the church and the mayhem begins. Bogue wants the town for his own to compliment his gold mining company within earshot.
Now comes "Sam Chisolm" (Denzel) into a saloon looking for a desperado. After brief conversation with the bar tender (the perp) violence ensues and we learn that he is the most awesome shot in all of the Golden West. Soon, after hooking up with Emma Cullen (Bennett) he recruits six other men to fight Bogue's army of thugs. Not only is Denzel a super shot his six recruits are equally astonishing. Some gimmicks never die but at least they stopped to reload every once in a while.
This is really an up-to-date Western with the overall story and characters. We develop just a tiny bit of each character by learning their sins against society and, in some cases, their weirdness (D'Onfrio).
The action sequences were lengthy and satisfying (for you savages) and were the principal character in the film. Good news.
This was not an actors movie although Denzel and Sarsgaard did well for what they were given. This was a stuntman's movie with all the dying and falling and rolling about. Nothing really disappointing at all...in fact, it was far better than I expected. This was not a "personality" movie but a good action-drama film with light moments (Pratt and D'Onfrio).
Go ahead and saddle up with the ball and chain and gallop on down to the local picture show. You will enjoy it and never think about a black man slinging around a gun in 1879 in the Old West.
This is a new, universally acceptable kind of Western. Enjoy.

Yet another SF myth debunked:
"Another myth is that, in the 1860s, a Chinese restaurant cook in San Francisco was forced to serve something to drunken miners after hours, when he had no fresh food. To avoid a beating, the cook threw leftovers in a wok and served the miners who loved it and asked what dish is this-he replied Chopped Sui."

Sully is Citizen Kane compared to this turkey...
Yeah, not so good. I found it pretentious or maybe pompous and with too many contrived tension/relief sequences, esp as the team was introduced to us. Was also hoping for some modern day spectacular technicolor cinematography but even that was MIA. On numerous occasions I found my attention drifting off to the score...there were some really interesting musical moments and audio effects. In fact, as I reflect on it, the score might have been the best part of the entire experience. I think I'm going to pick up the soundtrack for extended listening.
Hi, I have not seen it but saw the trailers. All I thought was it was very untimely for Denzel Washington to play a super cool gun fighter. I thought he could pick his roles. Why this one now?....Mark Korda
...what bigger film for him recently, especially with Fuqua as director.
All I know is I did not care about anyone in this film.
It felt as if something was being pushed into my public eye. A real tear jerker.I never thought the original was all that great either.

...good review, but I didn't like it quite as much as you did even though it is pretty entertaining.Too much Chris Pratt and not enough Ethan Hawk and a larger Vincent D'Onofrio. Could have used a little more humor.
With a pretty, feisty young widow.
Peter Skarsgard is excellent as the villain.
A big gun battle where the good guys never miss and the bad guys seldom hit anyone - all with unlimited bullets - but it's beautifully choreographed.
Let's say it's an update of the superior Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn film that the younger generation will appreciate.
