saw the latest print on the big screen the other night.
What a marvel, easily one of the best films we've seen and
we were AMAZED we hadn't seen it previously.
{sigh}... We thought we had. We recognized iconic scenes used
in various film histories.
A timeless tale told in perfect fashion, seeing this will propel
me to check out more of the post German Fritz Lang films
which are much less familiar to me than the half dozen or so silent
films viewed so far.
Earlier prints (post 1960) of M were edited and messed with to no end; this
print from 4 years ago is supposedly as close to the original release
as is possible. MANY scenes inserted had no sound and were like
snapshots inserted to make the story more cohesive.
What a brilliant film!

Follow Ups:
It has been decades since I saw that film, I would love to see the version you saw on a big screen. I remember after I saw M in film class we started studying Hitchcock and of course Hitchcock/Truffaut was our text book and when they got to talking about Peter Lorre T asked if he had seen M and Hitch replied that he had but didn't remember much about it except "Wasn't there a whistling man in it?". I thought that was a bit of a dis and jealousy was raising its ugly head proving our heroes are human too.

that spans the centuries (minus the technological parts which can be substituted for) forward into the future. That last linse sums it all up:
"One has to keep closer watch over the children".
"All of you"
Mind you children come in all ages and sizes and we must all remain vigilant.
And these days the brownshirts come in ALL colors;often sporting a red power tie.

It takes a village to raise a robot.
What did they call these robots before they called them robots?
Not sheep; that's a different path.
Don't think robot is even as old as my oldest friend.

Watch out for all the DT past and coming.
An old adage -don't mention cocaine or freebasing, unless you have enough to share.
Where? When?
...
his performance was riveting in M.
His career took an interesting arc due to the European upheaval and how Hollywood
decided to utilize his talents.
He was one of those actors that made every second of a role (no matter how"small"), big and memorable.
How he fit into, say, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, A&OL, et al and matched performances with and likely
helped elevate them with SO MANY GREATS is testimony to his brilliance.
I think I need to find a biography on him.
