I got back from a matinee today. After seeing it I recognize why there was no need for 3D or imax. Most of the action was going on within the audience's brain cells trying figure what the hell to make of this film.
Actually, I liked it. Cerebral. Pretty weird looking aliens, I must say.

As you know, they were attempting to communicate with aliens. Well, finally, they discovered that music is the universal language. So, of course, they turned to the greatest music known throughout the whole universe, that of Elvis Presley.
Soon, all 12 sites throughout the world were filled with singing and dancing, as heptapods, soldiers, politicians, scientists, and civilians got down to "Viva Las Vegas." This went on for quite a while.
Just as the joyous celebration was winding down, the King himself showed up in holographic form and sand "You Ain't Nothin' but a Heptapod."
It was stunning.
....it's pretty cerebral with a slow and sure pace. I found it thought provoking at multiple levels in spite of a few serious plot holes. Overall, it's a fairly atypical sci-fi in the context of today's action oriented, explosion laden blockbuster production. Good entertainment and I can understand why critics liked it but I think current events are working against mass appeal.
...even my wife enjoyed.
I thought it was terrific.

...Although "Star Trek" was an interesting take on the times, in retrospect most episodes strike me as preachy morality plays. "Outer Limits" (and "Arrival") much less so regarding the preachy part. And by "cerebral" I mean to suggest some real-time thinking is required to best enjoy "Arrival". I wonder if the current zeitgeist properly supports mainstream entertainment requiring thought as opposed to mindless, visceral, gut thumping action and violence.
I would have walked as well.

Looking at my local theaters I can't find any Imax or 3D for this film. Just Standard.
-Steve
It was shot mostly with an Arri Alexa, which I liked, as I prefer digital movie images to film movie images with their graininess and frame shuddering. But to each his/her own.

...because I don't have the skill or interest in summarizing it.
5-1/2 stars on the 5-scale.
