There's new serial on Netflix: Easy Living. Category - Crime, but it is far deeper than that, and so far, after one full season, seems to deserve its 5-star rating. It is rich in personal and family stories, so much so that my wife can't wait to see more. No overt violence either - very unusual for a crime story.
The second season started on low note, so far, but I hope they gain speed.
Swarming with interesting characters, and quite poignant in some observations, so it is easy to recommend.
We've seen the first three episodes so far: talk about dark humor! ;-)
We stayed in Helsinki for a few days about six years ago - we loved it!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Finland is strange place. Very clean, organized, friendly and civilized, but it was impossible to find a working bar in Tampere at 9pm. :) Still, I really loved visiting it.
The film is engrossing, even though there are some questionable things in the plot. A visitor discussing crime details with the prisoner on the prison phone, the one that connects through the glass separator? I thought all such conversations were monitored anywhere in the world. No personal experience, though. :)
The end of the third season is fast approaching, and I am already feeling the separation pain.
We're both still very enthusiastic about it - every character is so corrupt and unscrupulous, and yet, despite their best efforts, they're always suffering for their venal predilections. And they never seem to learn - that wife can't tell the truth to save her life! Very entertaining, with, as I said, lots of dark humor. (Although my wife, perhaps echoing a bit of Eldragon's post below, commented on how the modernist architecture of some of the buildings, e.g., the school, seems so cold to her!)
Like any other show, one will find things to criticize in that one. To argue about the characters and their actions - for instance, there will be a strange twist to their daughter's one in the last season.
But it had to be that way, as they tried to cover pretty wide swatch, making the character less one-dimensional, and I liked that.
The quality also moves up and down from some episodes to the others, but the overall result is quite rewarding.
As far as the minimalist styling - definitely... but Finland has been one of my favorite countries to visit, I always felt very comfortable there.
The ending is symbolic and almost surrealistic - it was almost like the Il Pagliaccio's "La Commedia è finita!" - it just HAD to end at some point, unlike many other endless, and as result, boring shows.
...very 'cold people' - kind of like 'leaving dead'
That would be a tough film to make, and watch, given the brutality and conditions that both the Soviets and the Finnish were in.
(Although, I doubt there are many people on this site, other than you and I, who even know to what I am referring.) ;-)
...is a very realistic Finnish war film. There have been others, things like The Cuckoo.
