I wouldn't have been so perplexed when I saw it. I thought it was the strangest, most incomprehensible film. Reflecting back on it, I see a certain twisted genius in the whole affair. It was a huge risk but I don't think it paid off as it should have.

...two things occurred to me.
Was Bardem the devil like in Rosemary's baby?
What was all that violence and chaos at the end supposed to represent besides hell?
Then I read Aronofsky's description of what it was about.
Still didn't make total sense.
Roger Ebert once said you know you've seen a great film if you can't remember where you parked your car leaving the multiplex.
This qualifies as disorienting.
