I always enjoy a sci fi film with an open ending, the famous last scene that raises questions. A winning tradition that is not forgotten here.
There were a few forced scenes to drive the story, at my theatre a few laughs were generated when the lead character , of course, went exploring in the only dark space alien hole within miles, and it didn't go real well, of course.
I enjoyed the movie, so much so I got over my grudge whenever Natalie Portman , a prototype tiny little actor , is cast as an action lead bad ass. I'll take story over super hero punch outs every time.
My condolences to the guy who can't handle women as actors. Gives me a reason to count my blessings, plus , having seen the movie, I get the explanation that he never will. There were more subtle touches than howling blunders, I thought it a good space invader movie, and as a fan of the genre, I have seen some real stupid stuff, and still enjoyed the shows. This is not one of those. It could be a movie about pro creation instead of annihilation, some characters have a lot of drive.
Follow Ups:
There were plenty of bad reviews about Annihilation and that confuses me- Why will a flick like Black Panther or Wonder Woman get rave reviews - when Annihilation gets pummeled with dissatisfaction and anger?
Annihilation reminded me of Soderbergh's version of Solaris with some John Carpenter's The Thing thrown in for good measure (though the special effects in Annihilation paled comparatively).
The performances were all curiously played with a restrained monotone - but I found this riveting and it created tension (some might complain it was boring) Me? I felt like I was reacting for the main players, despite their colorless emotional breadth.
Was Annihilation about death, reincarnation, marriage ...??? I honestly don't know. But that's okay. I thought about Annihilation numerous times afterwards - it captured my imagination... and that's more then I can say, after watching 99% of what's being spit out on a Hollywood conveyor belt these days.Have a great day!
