This, much like 'Road to Calvary', painted all revolutionaries as complete assholes. Unrelenting assholeness from all the "greats". Trotsky is painted to be as big an a-hole as Stalin. I found it interesting in the way the miniseries was structured with constant flashes forward and backward which show how much German money was pumped into Russian revolutionaries and how the revolution began to turn on itself with paranoia.
(Interesting note: I had heard over the years that Lenin was so devoted to the revolution and proletariat that he slept on a sofa in his office. The series took pains to explain Lenin had a stroke late in his career and then rested on a sofa in his office during the day when necessary. Thanks for the correction.)
With Trotsky's overbearing nature, I'm surprised he lived as long as he did. His life in Mexico was restful as first and he had a lovely friendship with Frida and Diego, especially Frida.
Not sure how much post-revolutionary propaganda was at play or whether this eight-part drama was comic book history. It will keep you interested.
3 wonks for story, editing, and actors
2 wanks not knowing how much is actual history
Follow Ups:
Historically, the Byzantine world was a slave camp masquerading as the Eastern Roman Empire, until it fell to the Ottoman Turks, which was a slave camp masquerading as an empire... and now as a nation state.
The slave market was centered in Caffa, Crimea. When Byzantium fell, the Eastern Roman Empire shifted to Russia, which is a slave camp. The Russian Revolution was nothing but a change of masters from Autocrat to Commissar. Russians will never be free. What a pathetic excuse for a civilization :(
Garbage Unlimited. Typical of modern day russian production dreck. Product of "1st Channel", which is Putin's official organ.
the heavy, anti-communist bias in their historical made-for-TV series. Initially, that's why I posited about the overall tone that all Revolutionaries being obnoxious ogres.
I actually enjoyed it. It may be tainted, comic book history but I found it compelling to watch.
...but one thing has been clear for two decades now: they have been desperately trying to put some daylight between them and the communists.
Hence the different name for the same band of criminals. New titles, without any real new meaning. Slightly massaged abbreviation for the bloody and still feared secret police.
All that is supposed to give the unwashed masses reason to believe things have somehow changed. Of course, in reality nothing has changed. It is still the same totalitarian regime, simply somewhat adapted to modern times.
China is following pretty much the same model - there is on surface more freedom today, but don't you dare to cross that invisible line... the bloody communist shit hammer remains on the ready. Political assassinations did not go anywhere.
Well, maybe if Boris "the abstinent" Yeltsin would not fuck things up and the wealth grab assisted by friendly western "advisers" would not bring the country on the brink of absolute chaos and collapse Russia could be a different state. Too late now for this. There are lots of legal and even more illegal immigrants from Ukraine and none from Russia. Things are actually pretty good there (materially) from what I heard from the Russians I met.
Ukraine will need 300 years to form any sort of homogeneous nation and have elites deserving to rule..
. . . into Porky "The Candyman's" (Poroshenko's) army. He thinks he's Henry VIII or something, trying to start his own religion (with the help of our own deep state). The slogan of his new church is, "Glory to God! Glory to the Heroes! Glory to Ukraine!" I wonder what Tymoshenko will do if she gets back into power? Maybe she'll be worse - or maybe she'll put Porky in jail! ;-)
. . . I know just what gift to get you!
I haven't seen that one, and have no inclination whatsoever. Their Grand Sewer produces hundreds of such "historic" crap every year - Youtube is full of them. One should approach them with great caution, better - with some good knowledge of facts already. Without ANY doubt, 99% of what comes out of Russia is garbage, unsuitable for human consumption. One is best advised not to waste his time on it... or at the very minimum have the fact checker on the ready.
I really, and truly don't give rat's ass where those mass murderers slept. There are constant attempts at humanizing unhumanizable. Only recently were made public his pictures as a vegetable, with saliva drooling down his chin. THAT is how that scum should be remembered.
BTW - Stalin also slept in his office. I guess that also made him so much more human.
I am very sorry Trotsky did not suffer... he should have been skinned alive.

But Putin has a plan for Russia to be the leading exporter of organic and "uncontaminated by GMO's" (thanks Monsanto!) natural products. Some of the personal care products I use already (and you too can get them off ebay - I know you want to!):
(I got this from Lithuania. . .
don't they hate Russia in Lithuania? - LOL!)
And of course I now use several varieties of SPLAT toothpaste:
I know it will seem amazing to you that I have had no hair loss (or loss of teeth!) since using these fine Russian products! ;-)
Russian BP meds so we can discuss their made-for-TV miniseries. He was described in 'Trotsky' as the "missing protege". Busted.
I can't even think now of one such example. If anything, it is even far worse than Hollywood. Every bit as stupid and idiotic, but far more primitive and antiquated technically.
We have just been exposed to their three recent marvels. Simply awful, all of them. They all show clear signs of mental degradation.

. . . even when, by contrast, the 38-year-old former Prosecutor General of Crimea sends us her end of 2018 good wishes, full of peace and love. (I think she did well to stay on her horse while not spilling any champagne from her glass! Nice horse - and nice digs she's got too!)
...no such obvious Ukrainian accent.
Soon after the warrant was originally issued, she held a press conference noting that they were free to try to come and get her, and that the Crimean prosecutor general's office was even open at night for their convenience! ;-)
As one soviet-era black marketeer used to say: "For ANY merchandise there is a buyer". :-)

The original ones, that cost 4 kopecks for a pack of 2. They say they were largely responsible for high birth rate.
I interact a lot on another forum with people living in Russia, and I don't think any of them would touch these products if other choices were available.
Their opinion on local products is usually extremely low. If you want, I can ask their opinion on these.
. . . that their aim "was to weave a fictionalized narrative around the basic facts of Trotsky's biography". So I think that's your answer right there. I haven't seen it myself. More:

...for my wife as she walked into the room.
She gave me some choice words... the likes of which I have not heard since my time in the army.
She had her chance... instead she made me watch The Servant.
