I have a BenQ 8720 FP and Direct TV HD which can get to the FP via HDMI or Comp. Video. I much prefer the comp. video. The HDMI does not seem to improve definition and the colors look washed out. The colors with the comp. cable are far more life like. I plan to go with a universal HD player eventually and had always planned to use the HDMI cable but now not so sure. Has anyone had a similar experience?
thx.

With my Samsung HD receiver and JVC RS-1 projector, I first connected them with high-end component cables of 4' length. Then I inserted the HDMI cable that came with my Oppo 980 and noticed a small improvement. Then I switched to a 1.5m Harmonic Technology HDMI and again saw a small improvemet. This was all on a Fox or a CBS 720p signal.
With the Oppo itself, the same level of improvement was seen between the two cables. Not much, however, I must emphasize.
Difference is, only the HDMI cable allows the player to perform its upconversion-to-1080p stunt.
Hope that helps.

When I hooked up my plasma set to my Dishnetwork receiver with an HDMI connection, the picture looked so spectacular I never bothered to even try component cables, even though I have a high quality set of them. On my set each input has its own set of adjustments for picture quality- color balance, contrast, saturation, etc.- that are remembered for that input. So my question: could the washed out colors with the HDMI input simply have some from different settings for that input? You didn't notice any resolution difference, which I don't find that surprising, but I could easily imaging colors being different. I have different settings for my over-the-air broadcast input from those for the satellite. Maybe I should try component input, though it's hard for me to imagine things getting even better. I looked at dozens of sets in many stores, and I only a few with better pictures, and I knew why in those cases. They were better sets and cost a lot more.

or we both have settings issues. I've never been blown away by DVI vs. Component differences, at least with satellite STB sources. Could be a cable issue: my Component cable was 3-4x the price of my DVI cable. Or the display system works better with component vs. DVI ?
