What other BDs have you watched? Gangs has some problems. There are artifacts, edge enhancement, and worst of all, digital noise reduction issues.

I didn't find it that bad. I've watched others like Crash that had grain. I don't find grain an appealing part of watching movies..never have. Even Pirates of the Caribbean at Worlds End had detectable grain.
Mr.Brooks was another BR that looked decent.I don't like over etched either. I discovered recently the older Blu rays are Mpeg 2 and newer ones are Mpeg 4. I wonder if this has something to do with the differences I see from movie to movie on Blu ray?
I get about 4 BR's weekly to preview. I can't remember the names of them all.I liked the colors in Gangs of New York, not overly vivid but quite natural and vibrant on my system.

While MPEG-2 can look OK, its much harder, requiring more space and higher bitrates to do so, and its still not as good as MPEG-4/AVC.
Also, as time goes by, they probably get better at compressing audio/video.
