I was at CES and stopped by the Pioneer booth. No new plasmas, I was disappointed. I was looking for the Kuro 9mm. What I found out was that Pioneer will have an update for their blue ray players at the end of April.
This will allow you to hear the DTS Master Sound through their analog outputs. Sony showed the 3D capable LCD tv. looked very interesting. Panasonic showed their new blue ray to replace the 55, I think it is called the 65. It will retail for 400.00 and gives both high resolution sound via their analog outputs. Panasonic also showed their portable 8 inch blue ray player. This will retail for about 800.00.

I've certainly always wondered how Blu Ray 1080p resolution would look on an 8-inch diagonal screen..in fact I stayed awake last night worrying that people watching 8-inch screens were not seeing their movies as clearly as they could if they are still using the old 480p DVD technology.
NOT!
They said the resolution on the small screen would be 960X520, if I remember correctly. To get the full resolution you need to attach it by HDMI to a 1080P monitor.
The 9G is their current plasma build. The 10x is speculated to have a substantial increase in picture quality and will likely be manufactured by Panasonic with Pioneer technology.
After living with HDMI 1.3 I'd rather not pay for analog outputs.
The problem is I have a Classe processor that does not have HDMI, so I have to use the analog outputs. The new Classe 800 is 8,000.00 retail. I will have to wait next year to buy it at a reasonable price.
Do I really need new Pre/pro with the right video processor(s) in the source or display and decent analog outputs from a good source player ?
I'm guessing this is your audio and HT system. For the cost of appropriate analog cabling you could buy an inexpensive modern receiver with all the bells and whistles while you wait for the 800 to show up used. The very best HDMI cabling will run you $10-$50 depending on the length. I'm having a blast with my new HT receiver and Blueray.
...receivers suck. Especially in the area of amplification. For most people who have a high-quality pre/pro, going to a receiver would be an enormous step down.
Regardless of how good any older pre/pro is it simply can't process the modern media. My suggestion was simply an interim solution because of the difficulty in finding a player at this time. The original poster could still use his amplifier. But thanks for stating the obvious.
Your post was sooooo friendly and helpful.
I got the same feeling from yours. I apologize. This medium has it's shortcomings for me.
I accept, and offer same. It's all too easy to mistake intentions in this kind of environment, and quickly escalate to flames.
