After seven years of being totally television free I'm thinking of getting a video set-up exclusively for films on DVD. The only probable givens so far are a screen size in the 37" - 42" range and that I very much doubt that I will opt for 5.1 or 7.1, sound will likely be stereo (possibly with a subwoofer). I have older preamps and power amps I can press into service. This system will be totally separate from my audio system. The idea is to do this as cheaply as possible for new equipment without seriously compromising quality. Since I watch quite a few subtitled films it needs to have legible subtitles at an eight or nine foot viewing distance. I'm looking for recommendations for both a television and DVD players. The Blu-ray or not and 720p vs 1080p questions remain open.

In other words, what's your budget?
A grand max for the television and probably $600 for the DVD player marks the high end. Less is better. DVD/Blu-ray will always be the source no cable, dish or over-the-air broadcast at least for the foreseeable future.
What are my audio out options likely to be from the DVD/Blu-ray player? As noted I don't want surround sound and have audio preamps and amps I could use. I there any reason that I ought to consider buying a pre/pro if I don't want surround? I really don't want to buy a POS A/V receiver and given the rate of change in the technology I'm dubious about used pre/pros.
