I just bought a new Samsung 50 inch plasma television. Great picture, but there is a noticable buzz that may be enhanced by the entertainment center the tv is in. I was wondering if sound-proofing foam may eliminate some or all of this buzz if I install it in the entertainment center. Any other ideas?
I believe the buzz is related to the brightness of the television as you can hear a slight pitch change as it brightens or dims.
Follow Ups:
My Panasonic 50" has a buzz, but to hear it, I have to stick my head behind the set. Not audible at all in viewing position.
My Samsung plasma has the buzz, which fires backwards from the vent holes and openings on the back. When the TV is in a closed space (closed-back TV racks or "nooks"), sound goes back, then reflects off the wall and amplifies in the cavity around TV. If it bothers you a lot, trying sound-dampening material in the cavity will help lessen the buzz.
Samsung plasmas are notorious for their buzzing. The company has done nothing to fix it; therefore, I must presume they consider it a feature. I haven't heard of them getting worse (ie, louder) over time, but they don't get any better.
It's been going on for years with them, but here's the latest on Samsung's
Presuming it's supposed to be there i.e. inherent in the design. Check your manual carefully, usually near the end, they may refer to it in a roundabout away near where they talk about stuck pixels...
IME it's most noticeable on plasmas with very thin glass (which is visually preferable in most cases). May just be a coincidence, but I don't think so...
Yes, it's more noticeable on brighter/whiter scenes. In my case, I use an "energy saving" mode and that reduces the buzz dramatically. Can you do that? I don't see any real diff in the PQ here that way (Pio TV). I can hear the buzz when there's no audio, but it's not as loud as my PS3 even which is farther away (the Oppo is almost silent). So it's not that loud. I'd prefer if it wasn't there at all, but part of the (thin glass?) plasma experience...
