I watched "G Force" on Samsung's new $6200, 240hz LED TV. The picture looked more like video than film playing BD. What gives?
Follow Ups:
That is not inherant to LCD TVs; you can turn that effect off in the adjustments. Set the adjustments correctly and you'll get a smooth picture without the effect.
Information is often available at enthusiast sites about proper settings for specific TVs. Some late model Samsungs look best with "blur" set near the max and "judder" set at the bottom; the "judder" being the adjsutment that gives the soap opera look.
I have my American model 37" Samsung B-650 set pretty closely to the the settings this test at a British site recommends and the picture is excellent.
It was Phillip's up-rez solution for coping with standard def. It made everything sharper, but it also tended to make film-based source material look like video - very good video but not very "film-like". It was great for watching cable, and I got used to it, but I always turned it off for DVD watching.
I have a hard time describing this effect, which was like the LCD/LED PQ you see now for all source material. Cartoonlike doesn't quite get it - I didn't have my Phillips set to torch mode. Video seems hard and "of this world". Film seems smoother and more "of another world".
But I definitely notice "it", whatever "it" is - just one more reason of several I prefer plasmas for watching movies.
I see it too, and that's what keeps me from getting a LCD or LED set, regardless of any other benefits they may have. If the picture quality isn't right, it turns me off. So, its still plasma for me. A properly calibrated plasma display is just gorgeous!
I call it the "cartoon effect".
My buddies 42" Samsung 120Hz TV makes everything look like a cartoon (and I've seen others on display with the same effect, particularly when they're playing cartoons... ba-dum). I'll take a non-cartoon picture with less resolution anyday. Is it his settings? Most likely. But he loves it so I'll let him be. My 50" Samsung plasma has a much nicer picture out of the box IMO. Haven't played with the settings yet.
It could be a settings issue. I suspect, unfortunately, a lot of people like eye popping colors and the "Soap Opera" effect seems a likely result with typical settings. Get yourself a Plasma instead...
:)
because I do watch cartoons and get what you mean. As to the other term, ??? to me.
Yes, some people whose friends :) have convinced them to get a plasma for their new TV, to replace an LCD, do complain that they're not eyeball-burning enough. I have the brightness (among other things) turned way down on my plasma and it still lights up the whole room on some scenes. Admittedly it's pretty lame for daylight viewing, which I never do, so that explains the "soap opera" thing...
You watched one disc on one TV and have already a name, for the effect, that applies to all LCD/LED sets?

If don't have an answer, just say so. BTW, I've seen the effect on other's, but didn't pay attention to it.
"The "Soap Opera Effect" on LCD/LED TV's."
That's the way I read it.

Just the ones that have that circus-like feature turned on.
