When I signed up they didn't bother to tell me that if the wind blows or it rains or there's clouds.....I can't watch tv. All I get is a 'searching for satellite' message.
They sign you up for two years, first year is discounted. They tell you there will be a big discount for the second year.
IT'S FIVE F*CKING BUCKS. So now I'm paying $80 a month for basic tv service (no HBO, etc).
What a complete and total screw-job. I hate these f*ckers.

It's a dish alignment issue. The more satellites thay put up, the more exacting the pointing has become. At the same time, the less skilled the techs that they send to your house have become. That being said, once they get it right, you should only lose signal during the heaviest downpours and then for about five minutes (in DC the summer can have monsterous thunderstorms and I've had about two five minute drops all summer).
When you talk to retention, make sure you complain about the capability of the techs and make sure they send the "A Team" next time. Not everybody has time for this, but I find it's useful to have more knowledge than all but the best techs--head on over to DBSTalk.com for the crash course and to keep up with what the system is capable of.
I've thrown multiple techs out of my house and my parents house--one insisted that the local channels came in on the 119 satellite, one wanted to move my dish onto my screened in porch roof from the rock solid mounting on the side of my house (after some Q&A I discover he does not have a masonry drill) and one wouldn't switch out a fried multiswitch without screwing with the (well pointee) dish first (they go through the idiots checklist and have a hard time starting at "D" without first screwing with "A" even though "A" isn't the problem).
There are some A teamers out there though and you will know it when they are at your house--get their cards when they are there! It's a damned good system when you get it right. I've got four DVRs networked and can pull anything off any of them from any of seven locations in the house. That always shuts the FIOS guys up when they push their 200GB "whole-home" DVR--I've got nearly 2 TB of space networked together.
Good luck!
Been with DirecTV since 1998. Their service has be very good. The picture drop is maybe once/twice per year. Heavy rain or big snowflakes may cause it to drop. Notified that I'm getting NFL Sunday Ticket this year for free - for being 'a loyal customer over the years' .... I wouldn't think of switching to cable or Dish...
...they carry both horse racing networks (HRN and TVG) without having to buy into a special sports package (we don't watch football, basketball etc unless the home team is i the playoffs).
I realize this is not a big deal for most people, but it is to me. Alas.

I've talked to about five more people at Directtv. I finally asked for the 'customer retention' dept, but the first person there was useless, so I talked to her supervisor. It took a long time but I got her to drop by bill about eighteen dollars a month.
I also beat them into sending someone out to find out why I get dropped signals without charging me fifty bucks.
Before you sign up you talk to the smart, nice people. Then apparently once they've got you by the balls you deal with people who would not be out of place at the local cable company.

Just kidding. Sumbuddy told me year ago, if you get a supervisor you'll almost always get a discount.
Well played.

If you're losing signal with mild weather conditions you have an alignment issue. Heavy weather will cause a loss of signal. There is no way around it. If you're that unhappy contact your cable company and work out a deal where they pay your early termination penalty.

I had some of that with Dish Network, but was due to placement of the Satellite Dish.
Neighbors tree started blocking the signal. Switched to Directv (insted of paying to Dish to have it moved), had the Dish mounted on roof/ Fireplace Chimney, no problem. Clear line of site is most important. Loose connections outside?
We've had DirecTV for 9 years here in central Florida. The rain and thunderstorms in this area are often incredibly intense. We are from central New Jersey and never experienced such storms until moving down here.
We occasionally lose the satellite signal, but only during the heaviest downpours. Even then, the outage rarely lasts longer than about five minutes. At no other times do we ever lose a signal. Back in 2004, during a hurricane, we viewed TV coverage of the storm while winds outside our house were blowing at 90 mph. (I'm still amazed the dish wasn't torn off the side of the house.) The hurricane caused thousands of cable customers, including our neighbors, to lose their service for several weeks (yes, weeks), while we never once lost a minute of crystal-clear TV reception.
Something must be wrong with the way your dish and/or outdoor components were installed.
They'll offer you a discount, counter it & ask for a larger one, supervisor comes on and you'll end up with more than a $5 discount.Above based on my experience with The DISH. Of course, the longer you've been with them the bigger discount you'll be able to negotiate.
BTW, was the $5 discount in yr two clearly stated in yr contract?
Over a year, I may have lost an hour or two of programming due to weather. Not a big price to pay, IMHO, for a light year's better picture than ATT U-Verse delivers.
Good luck!
