Follow Ups:
I now have Charter cable TV (SW lower Michigan Co.) and the DTV remote ease of use smokes it. The DTV really impresses me with how convienient it is to use and the cable remote is down there with Dish Network remote, maybe worse, too soon to tell.
cable sound is bad, a bit worse than DTV.
Cable picture is surprisingly good, HD as good as DTV off air and the standard def stuff is clearly better than DTV standard, so I am kind of geeked about that.
DVR works pretty nice and is supposed to hold 100 HD hours.
Overall not bad for a savings of $40.
fwiw the bottom line reason I switched is that a big tree does not permit me to use HD with DTV and they just brought my price back up (charging me for HD) after an extended discount period.
my two cents...
thanks guys!

...he hanged on to DIsh network for the satellite feed.

I've got some, uhhh, pretty strong opinions.
When my 1 year commitmment is up in Feb. 2012 I'll definitely do the switch back to DISH.
U-Verse problems:
Picture not as good. No doubt about that. Still a "nice" hd piccy but not up to satellite standard.
Service interruptions galore. I can't tell you how many times I've had to reboot the router, unplug the cable box and let it reboot, etc., to correct picture freezing problems, or temporary lost service problems. If I have zero problems between now and feb. I still will have had maybe 10 times as many problems as I had in a typical DISH year.
The only reason I dropped DISH was that bundled service thru U-Verse (phone, Internet, TV) was cheaper, by quite a bit, than using DISH for TV and U-Verse or someone else for internet and Phone.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
also price increases and long installs with repeat visits to get it right.
I think I will consider cable (gasp) now to bundle and save money.
Thanks
Phil
Also it can be accessed from other non DVR boxes in the house. Much more storage than the DISH (formerly an industry leader in DVR storage). It's very intuitive and easy to use. The DVR is the one thing I'll miss.

..
2x as much as my old DISH, SOTA, DVR used to have. and about the same as U-Verse has
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
they look about the same...
No hint of signal degredation on DVR payback.

DVR (70hours) with no hint signal degredation noticed on playback. Plus we still have the Dolby Digital sound intact.

How big are the U-Verse hard drives ???With DIRECTV, you can add an external ESATA drive to each supporting STB. I believe the external ESATA can be up to 2TB. They also have the Multi-Room-DVR functionality so you can access the content from your other STB hard drives.
Thanks,
Tim

as opposed to about 80(????) hrs. with the standard U-Verse DVR in HD.
To be honest, too much DVR storage is a negative for me, as I'll screw around and record everthing and not watch it.
