First, not a Phoenix fanboy. Secondly, Ridley fanboy. Thirdly, they both let me down. This film is primarily about how uncouth and downright crazy Napolean was (supposedly). So, much of the time was spent on Phoenix raging and brooding over Josephine. Ridley employed his action skills with the few battle segments there were. Waterloo was the longest (as should be) but was not the masterpiece of Bondarchuk's 'Waterloo'. So, we have the seaminess of Napolean and Josephine against the craziness of The Reign of Terror with the treachery of Napolean's brother pulling him up whenever he could. I suppose this is the "most inside" look at Napolean's life via motion picture and should be seen on that alone. |

IIRC, this guy is Russian, but he has a Ukrainian wife. He's been doing a lot of analysis of the Ukrainian conflict over the last year and a half, so he comes at the subject from a military strategy perspective. Anyway, here's his own summary: Hollywood Strikes Again. . . as they demolish the almost mythical figure of Napoleon. Apart from multiple historical inaccuracies, the story itself is not even interesting, and the time jumps ruin everything. View YouTube Video |
I humbly defer . . . excellent review. *, posted on November 25, 2023 at 14:09:20 | |
