"Planet Earth" on HD DVD

A small package from Amazon arrived for me the other day; too small, it seemed at first. But inside a single case are 4 HD DVDs containing 11 of the series. Aside from a nice metallic slipcover, there are no extras of any kind: No booklet, no additional features that I can see.

I've only viewed episodes 1 & 2 so far, and the production values are exceptional: One "impossible" shot after another, it just doesn't seem like it'd be possible to get footage so clear and so steady, without causing any apparent disturbance to the wildlife, even with an ultra zoom lens, image stabilization and a helicopter, yet I have to assume that's exactly what they used for many of the shots.

A bit overwhelming at times (like the producers try too hard to impress a jaded audience), but really dazzling to see.

With a few rare exceptions, its got stunning photography. My complaint was that the science was nothing new, nothing that you wouldn't find on PBS. Overll enjoyable though.

Hmmm. Have to weigh my options I suppose when I'm ready to buy.

I'm not sure why the discrepancy but guess it was to cut costs on what must have seemed like a "risky" product.
