Overacting, but in a good way

Like Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington (especially in Training Day) brings a good bit of creativity and entertainment to the part. In Training Day, Denzel was way over the top, but I found it to be an incredible and tremendously entertaining performance and I would most definitely agree with the academy's selection.

I would much rather watch Jack Nicholson or Denzel overacting and bringing some excitement to a role than watch a so called more natural and authentic actor who may be doing a role flawlessly but their lack of personality and creative goods puts me to sleep.

Going for authenticity at the expense of entertainment seems to defeat the point in my book.
