I also found the animation bits kind of annoying in practice, but I got what he was going for; the sequences were as ostentatious and vapid as actual hallucinations. That was mostly how I felt about the film, that he did a good job of conveying the substance [sic] of a drug-addled lifestyle, and the various shortcomings of the films (aside from a few shoddy scenes which came down to a not-so-great script and crappy acting, like the entirely unnecessary appearance of the girlfriend towards the end) proceed from that central strength, if that makes sense.

Been years since I saw Drugstore Cowboy, but I bet you're probably right. Never have seen Rush, though.
