"Close Encounters of the Third Kind"

When I saw the original in the late seventies I had the feeling that it had been rushed into release and did not reflect the work of the man who directed the skillfully edited "Jaws". Sure enough, another attempt was made 3-4 years later, where Spielberg took out footage, rearranged some parts, and added new footage, most dispointingly the "inside the alien ship" sequence, which distracted the viewer from any sense of mystery. So the second attempt IMHO was not a success either.

At one point Criterion issued both and included a failed arrangment where one could program the two to produce one big film (the original had to be recalled because you couldn't make it work).

The DVD, however, is a whole 'nother story. Here we finally get the film he was trying to make. It makes sense, it flows, and has a sense of wonder. Neery's close enocounter is a true woofer buster in DTS sound. And notice the "sound" of light after the ship passes over the truck: we know light has no sound but it just makes sense here.
