Re: "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"

I've always liked this movie. I didn't mind the original edit. The scenes that were cut where Dreyfuss destroys his house and yard in his attempt to build the mountain in his family room were some much needed comic relief. I also agree that going inside the alien ship could only be a let down. That should have been left to our imaginations.

Still, I enjoy the movie's 70s qualities regardless of which cut I watch. It captures the feel of middle-class America in those days really well. The movie has a sweet sentimental feel that is offset by Dreyfuss's cynical tone. It's a good match.

While we're talking Spielberg here, I tried to rent "Sugarland Express" the other day and was surprised to see it not on DVD. What's the deal there?
