Re: Lost in Translation... and... Jesus of Montreal

Murray is good in that movie, but also quite uneven. Better in the first 20 minutes, and then again in the end.

The twists and turns of the story are not all that important. What IS is how it is told, and Sofia definitely has soft touch and good sense of humor. Her dialogue was quite good in several spots.

The obligatory sex romp during a brief encounter is very much a recent Hollywood development. In older European movies you will find much more platonic relationships, and of course the classis American films didn't need that either - they had strong legs without it.

So a no-sex story is not such a novelty, but as I said, the story itself is not all that important. In telling this simple story she had, however, to resort to a few cliche' and I think she could have done better.

I kinda understand what the middle portion of the film is for... it is not the logic of the story again. It is the grab. It was there during the first 20-30 minutes, but then it let go, so my wife and I looked at each other there - we though the charm was gone for good. As I said, it recovered gradually. Sofia simply let the storytelling go flat for a while.

But as I said, all in all a good movie, with all its faults. Is it better than her first, and decidedly "girly" film? Without a doubt.

Ah, and for a major blunder... the hero arrives all by himself to the hotel.

I don't think you will find a Japanese host who will not arrange for meeting you at the airport. Been there...

But I loved those gloved taxi drivers and white lace head rest covers - they brought back the memories of our trips to Japan... unforgettable.
