I was really looking forward to this one and it was weak. Depp was terrible--I don't think he could convey an ounce of meanness that is necessary for a gangster role. I wondered if they ever considered swapping out the roles for Bale and Depp. After this, we now realize that Mann's polished, deliberate filmaking requires great acting to hold things together. Depp didn't do it.
