matching up def techs with a good reciever or preamp combo

140.254.63.2

I am in the market to upgrade my humble def tech 2006tl, CLR 2500, and BP1.2x setup with new receiver or preamp amp combo.
System as it stands:
Sony 835 (100x5)
Sony DVP NC555ES CD/DVD/SACD 5 disc
Signal cable interconnects, power cord, and speaker cable (great cable, in my opinion for the price signalcable.com)
Toshiba 32" 3 line digital comb filter
Sony VHS
Def techs as mentioned

I have read many a thread discussing the pros, and mostly cons of the def techs as two channel only systems (unfortunately I am pleasantly stuck with them until money is no issue), and many reviews about a number of receivers and combos in the $2-3,000 range. I am looking for a good balance between decent movie, and better 2 channel listening. I have listened to Rotel, Denon, Sony ES, parasound and soon to hear Marantz, and B&K. Feelings so far are tilting towards the Rotels, but unfortunately all but the Sony and Denon were on non-def tech setups. WAF factor is a must with looks and the "Holy crap! That sounds amazing!" response. 5.1 is most likely, but wouldn't turn away a 7.1 setup for future endeavors. Music is mostly fusion jazz, classical, jazz, and, on the rare occasion that I revert back, hard rock (like to turn it up a bit during these regressions of aggression). We do enjoy watching movies maybe 40% of the time the system is turned on. Room is an odd shape 12Wx36L (condo living, eh.) if that factors in or not with your advice.
I appreciate your time and knowledge if you choose to offer suggestions,
Thanks,
Mike
