I'm getting conflicting reports on the true nature of the difference between the different levels of Sony's, but today finally saw the Sony "HS" and "XBR" side-by-side, and the XBR's picture was a little bit sharper (better dot-pitch??). The sound system seemed a little bit better too - even with a built-in subwoofer of sorts. The difference in price is about 500 hundred bucks for the same size widescreen, which also buys an onboard receiver which at least I will not really need.

I've pretty much made up my mind on the 34" widescreen XBR, and have started "stalking", hoping for some gonga deals as they model year ends. Everyone I talk to says that the programming will be standardized to widescreen pretty soon (meaning less than 18 years, in your case).

My old TV is only 15 years old.

Keep in mind that these tvs weigh in at ~200 lbs. Do not buy one if you plan to move from place to place much.
