Sony S9000ES won't play sound

Help! My Sony S9000ES DVD player no longer sends sound to the T.V. The T.V. speakers work fine (JVC32D501) when watching cable, but when I set "input" to bring up the DVD, I can see the picture fine, but there's no sound. My 12 year son had been using it last. I have been through the manual. I have checked the cables. I have been through the t.v. manual. I have gone through setup on both. Maybe I messed something else up! Is there something obvious that I'm missing? I'm out of my league here.
