My understanding is that the PS2 is going to run closer to $350 and is not going to be progressive. I also do not think that the PS/PS2 is 1/2 of Sony's market, they are one of the largest TV makers in the world and they are in many markets (home audio, music recording, car audio, home video, computer, movie, communications and so on). The economy of scale applies to everything they make, including their own DVD players. I do belive that the PS2 will make a great DVD player, however I do not believe it will be any better than Sony's or anyone else's players at the $200-$400 price points.
