Hello I own a Sony STRDE935 ht amp for $600 cnd it has:

Stereo Mode: 110 watts per channel x2, 8 ohms, 20 - 20,000 Hz, 0.09% THD
Surround Mode: 110 watts per channel x5, 8 ohms, 1,000 Hz, 0.8% THD 4-ohm/8-ohm switch
multi-room audio output with independent source selection

2-way LCD Remote control shows station names, CD titles, surround sound modes and more -- right in your hand

24-bit Dolby® Digital, Dolby Pro Logic® and DTS decoder

32-bit DSP with 27 acoustic environments

Digital Cinema Sound system with three Cinema Studio modes

Virtual 3D and Virtual Theater modes

3 Optical digital inputs, 1 coaxial digital input

5.1 multi-channel input

S-LinkTM control system

10-function input selector with Phono Input

for not too bad ht performance and 2ch music for the money it's a good purchase if for some reason you don't like Sony, Technics have some nice ht amps for a decent price. hope this helps you. i would stick with the amp doing the decoding then you can have your dvd and amp optically connected as opposed to using analog cables
