S-VHS ET incompatibility problems or VCR Name Brand problems?

Hope someone can help me with this video dilemma I encountered...I recently used a Philips Super-VHS ET Hi-Fi VCR to tape a show off Comedy Central. I used a TDK E-HG blank video tape. The recorder itself was set in the S-VHS ET mode. I played the tape back and it looks great on my own Philips VCR (Model #VR960BPH). I also used the SP (standard play) speed mode to record...
When I tried playing the tape back on my cousin's Panasonic VCR (monaural, no hi-fi capability, no S-VHS, HQ system only)---very basic vcr, the picture(sometimes no picture) was horrendous with noise, black and white,---only the soundtrack sounded normal.Everything else visually was a bust ! I even tried playing it on a bare bones regular/mono Emerson VCR( no hi-fi or Super VHS circuitry)---- no picture , no sound, nada zip, just video/audio noise.
Is this common or the result of using the S-VHS ET mode from my Philips and then trying to play it back on a regular mono HQ Panasonic VCR ?
Is a S-VHS ET recorded tape incompatible to play back on a non-S-VHS ET deck? Or, just certain brands of vcrs will not play recorded tapes made on other vcrs?...Basically, is it a problem due to choice of recording method chosen or just name brand vcr incompatibility (or both)??
Any info, is greatly appreciated...I searched in the archives but could not find any mention of this. I also read my manual like crazy hoping to find an answer;none.
