Hi,
if you don't have a big room, screw surround sound. You need to sit in the middle of an imaginary circle with the speakers around you on the cirlce. If you can't do that it sucks.

Ok... you may have guessed I am doing HT in stereo. A sub is still a good idea. My TV has room for many inputs. I was worried about not having hi def switching on my HT pre/pro but it utrned out to be a non-issue.
I have hi def cable and my dvd running straight to the TV with room for
one more.

Speakers are a matter of taste. I suggest (and it's only a suggestion)
going with theater speakers. They should have a flat freq response, where stereo speakers do not.

Hsu makes a nice sub for about $500.
