RE: 1080p or 720p?

How about a different approach to the topic than others so far have suggested?

Whether you can tell the difference between the two resolutions is going to depend a lot on your viewing distance. While you can definitely tell the difference close up, the difference decreases as you move away from the screen. After a certain distance you can't see any difference between the two.

I can't remember what the critical distance is but I remember reading something about it again in the last few days and I think that person was quoting a critical distance of around 2.35 times the screen diagonal measurement. For a 42" screen that would be 98.7", say 8' in round figures.

Go to a shop where you can compare two 42" screens, preferably the 2 you're interested in, and take a look at them from around an 8' distance and also from whatever your viewing distance in the bedroom is going to be. Which one do you then prefer? The resolution may or may not be the deciding factor. It could also be something like colour rendition or black levels. Try and do the comparison is similar lighting conditions to what you'll be viewing in at home.

Remember that the above approach only addresses the bedroom situation. If you're considering moving the TV to another room at a later stage and viewing at a closer distance, then take that possible usage into account as well.

What you want is the best screen for your purposes. Screen resolution is important but it's not the only thing that makes a difference between 2 sets and it won't make a noticeable difference beyond a particular viewing distance. It may end up being the critical factor for you but it also may not. You shouldn't be starting from a point that says 1080p or 720p with no other considerations at all.
