I kind of wanted to go the PS3 route...

but my wife got me the S300 SONY for Christmas. I wanted the PS3 because of its dual use nature. I figured even if Blu-ray fizzled I could still play games. I really wish she had paid more attention and left the S300 in the store. As far as I'm concerned, the Blu-ray picture quality is little better than either my 1080p upsampling Oppo 980, my 1080i upsampling Panny S77 or (especially) my older 480p DENON DVD-3800. Seriously. The DENON is a true high-end machine which shames both of the newer players, IMO. Unfortunately it is somewhat unreliable though.

I have limited experience with the Blu-ray player so far but am not really too impressed. Yeah, Spiderman III looks cool (it came packed in the box with the S300), but Sky Captain, The Sopranos Season 6, Hellboy, and Shooter look no better than their regular DVD counterparts. If I were to guess right now, my bet is that BOTH formats fail. Word will get around fast that they basically offer little advantage (if that turns out to be the case). Like I said though, my experience so far is limited but I have to admit I am not impressed or very optimistic at this point. We'll see.

Cheers, Joe
