Yes I do suspect that too.
Are you using the A/V receiver's pre-out to your main amp AND switch to the A/V receiver's "processor bypass" (pure or direct in my case). If so, would'nt that negate the other processor options like "theater" or "panoramic" features of the receiver?
OR did you insert another "audio preamp" in your system? If so, where?
I did try connecting the receiver's pre-out to my Harman Kardon 930 (very musical vintage stereo receiver), and it actually sounded worse. I actually enjoyed movies and music videos much better when using the HK as a two channel HT.
You're spot on on your observation about the receiver sounding better for HT. But to be honest, it just was not as involving as using the HK by itself.
If I understand you correctly, I'm better off buying a better stereo amp than a mediocre 5 channel amp. Is that right?
