Connecting Powered centre speaker to Oppo-93

I've got a Stereo setup (Rowland Synergy IIi/Rowland 625) connected to my OppoBD-93. The problems I have is that I'll have to turn up the volume on my preamp almost maximum before being able discern clearly converations whereas when the background sound is much louder.
What I understood was that I'm missing a centre channel whereby much of the vocals are coming (stand corrected here). I'm looking for advise if I could connect a powered speaker like something from Audioengine would help my problem. Thanks for looking and any advise.

BTW, I have already configured the Oppo processor to use only front Left/Right speakers only.
