Nice to return to the quiet Asylum after the noisy few days at the HE show.Shows like that give you perfect opportunity to see things you would never want to see in your life, and not just once, but many times.
So I got my chance to finally see the Tiger... about 50 times, to be exact. What a boring and stupid piece of work.
I was also invited to the digital SW demo. Since everyone went, so did I.
I have not been to an American movies theater in several years. Now the next several years will be easy.
First, there were about 10 previews. Without an exception I should avoid all of those "films". That is a good bit of information.
And then the SW came and quickly set the new low for the level of boredom and stupidity. If not for Natalie - a beautiful sight to behold, and something I clinched to till the end - I would have left pretty early.
I am sure many have already described the image quality of the DLP digital presentation, and it was quite mediocre at best. The brilliance and contrast of the film are completely gone, replaced by the washed-off colors that would not be out of place on Sokurov's film (you can hardly see anything there anyway...), but didn't make any sense for something like your typical Americal movie.
I have a dream for the next HE show. We set up a room far away from other home theater installations with their noise, we hang the 4:3 screen with a single channel audio, and we simply play the classic movies. All in black and white... no exceptions. The Grand Illusion. The Bicycle Thief. Wages of Fear. Luci del varietà. Casablanca.
Follow Ups:
What about the great B&W classics of Japanese cinema from Mizoguchi, Ozu, Kurosawa etc. Or is this an Euro only feast!
No, there four spots and six previews.clark
...for Grand Illusion, but the above films would be a good start. And for giggles I'd have something by Preston Sturges, either Sullivan's Travels or The Lady Eve.
...we keep them both? I love both films.I would also go into the silent era. A little bit of Chaplin - he is too well known. But things like Max Linder would not hurt.
Old guilty pleasures? How about Lya De Putti - yes mama, shake those buns!
And of course - Clindren of Paradise...
For a great film with her go to "Variete"... if you can find it, that is.
I must assume this since most of your post is so abbrevated. Are you telling us you did not like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?
Come on Victor, it is a great film. So unlike the usual western dretch which usually comes out of Sony.
Perhaps if Portman had played a white colonialist queen...?
***I must assume this since most of your post is so abbrevated.Abbrevated (sic)? He-he... I guess so is yours... :-)))

I agree: it is an Asian dretch. I have no stomach for either. I thought it was pointless and boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. Offensively boooooooooooring.....
***Perhaps if Portman had played a white colonialist queen...?For all I care she could play a bag lady sitting by the trash dumpster for 90 minutes... I would watch.
More than boring..infantile and stupid, all sugar wraped in a pseudo religious ...syrup...
Portman is nice to look at,but het role in " Clone " was woody..the actor looked lost in front of the blue screen.
Is that movie? you must be jocking ! that is coca & pop corn...Too bad we have lost the pleasure of movie art...
All that is left is to go back to the past, hiding behind the ...classic...
I agree SW is not a movie, it is really just a video game extension. It is sad that today something like that passes for "movie" and creates such a stir. I also fully expect it to get plenty of Oscar nominations.
Portman's role... there is no role, really, nothing to play, so she is simply there. She has not yet demonstrated big acting talent - forget for the moment her debut in the Professional, where she was absolutely smashing, but one role does not an actor make, and now she has to work with skill where child's undeniable charm worked before. That may be tougher.
I don't quite share your pessimism that we have lost the pleasure of movie art. There are still many people who create it, it is the audience demand that has disappeared. Under the relentless pressure from the Hollywood juggernaut perhaps? Who knows... but the bottom line is when a good film is in town very few go to see it.
Good actors and directors will continue making fine films, because that is what they are put on Earth to do, but the real question is whether we will be able to see them, or they will only exist in some parallel universe? If it takes special effort to find them, you may pretty much assume that they will be found less and less frequently and some day will go the way of the steamers.
When clark retires from writing, who will tell us about the Wicker Man? BTW - he was there too, "enjoying" the SW... he-he... While my excuse for not leaving was Natalie, his was - sitting in the middle of the row... nice and delicate man that he is, he didn't want to disturb those around him. Kind he is.
Anyway, at least I didn't pay to see that "marvel". In fact, everyone was given boxes of candies, free popcorn and soda, and even t-shirts. So in reality I was given $20 just to come and enjoy it.
Natalie is a nice jewish kid with big bright jewish eyes...I confess I sty too for her..till the bitter end..if pessimism is realism...
where she played a 13-year-old (don't know how hold she was then) sending Timothy Hutton's heart a-flutter. Completely believable young teen-ager acting to me. And justifies Hutton's pining for her.

in an over puritan society....
And yes, she is incredibly seductive there, pretty much making the rest of the film irrelevant. But that was not a major role.
Did they cross-breed her with Jacqueline Bisset?
