I've always thought Burt Lancaster was a great actor and he's long been one of my favorite American actors. My three favorites are his performances in:1. "The Rose Tattoo" with Anna Manganni (sp). She is magnificent and he's just as good.
2. "The Rainmaker" with Kate Hepburn. Again. two great actors.
3. "The Birdman of Alcatraz' is one of my favorite films. It's very moving and Lancaster's performance is for the ages. This was the capstone of a fine career.
Follow Ups:
Probably the best performance by an actor I've ever seen except mayby Peter O'Toole in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. James
really enjoyed his performance in Elmer Gantry, Burt won Best Actor
Oscar, Golden Globe and NY Film Critics Awards for that role; also
liked him in Birdman and Crimson Pirate. - AH
My favorite perormances of his are Atlantic City and Gruppo di Famiglia in un Interno aka Conversation Piece.
.
I love that movie. I think Kirk Douglas and Fredrick March were just as excellent as Lancaster was.
in the current situation. Suppose Gore was in the White House and ....
Music is Emotion
Kind of pushing things as Lancaster was wont to do in his early career. Seemed ok to me here.
Burt grinned all the way through it. It was fluff, but it was fun.

Well, niether am I :). He had many good performances. I'll mention "Elmer Gantry", since no one else has.
" Sun is bad for you. Everything our parents said was good is bad. Sun, milk, red meat... college."
not as sentimental as some of his later films, like "Birdman"
But in "From Here To Eternity" he was part of an ensemble of fine actors. He was great, as usual, but Sinatra stole the picture! What a great movie! Compare this with the recent "Pearl Harbor" and it looks even better."Elmer Gantry" was a great performance. I'd call it a tour-de-force. I guess I just forgot this one.
terrific performance. (although he was upstaged for a moment during the "lemons" scene)
My two favorites are relatively small parts, in Local Hero and Field of Dreams. Lancaster was such a big personality that I often find his performance more impressive and overwhelming than actually enjoyable. The pirate movie(s?) he was in, the name of which I can't remember at the moment, seemed just right to me in terms of balance--and of course he was a circus performer to start, so it fits right in.
Both ViscontiŽs. Both about the falling apart of the world the protagonist was living in. Both mature masterworks.Regards
Sorry, my Italian is non-existant. Yes, Burt is phenonemal in that as the Statesman that sees the decline all too clearly; not dissimilar to his role in Bertoluccis "1900" in a way which was also masterful
Defining his best role is one very tough call!

And, had I done my homework, "Gruppo di familia in un interno" would have been "Conversation piece"...Regards
There's a quiet dignity and suffering to his character in that movie that are very different from the standard monologue/statement/pronouncement that Lancaster-impersonators use to parody him. Okay, he does pontificate on the penal system near the end, but the rest of the film is remarkable, especially the fallout with his mother.

I can't remember who played the kid who was his foil. Best line from the film (from the kid, speaking on a cellphone while driving in Houston): "It's just a telex deal." (that is, a deal that can be done by telex, rather than face-to-face discussions. Of course, that was in the pre-Internet era.
Yes, there will be always an pre-pre era...Look at the films a few years ago with the BIG cell phones...

with his role in "Atlantic City" a close second
