They are copy protected and, unlike laserdiscs, cannot be copied onto either tape od a recordable DVD.

And it's been done for years -- legally.Distribution and/or sale of the copies is what's illegal -- not making copies.
...and they are. But it is not really legal to discuss it.
I don't have a DVD burner, but I have friends who do and you can buy programs all over the place to copy DVDs. Amazon.com sells DVD X Copy and that is the only name I know, but I also know there are others and places like Best Buy also sell them. So I doubt they are illegal.
It is legal to make a backup copy of your DVD for personal use only. I backup my DVDs to MPEG4 format and keep them on my pc’s hard drive. I can usually get a 2 hour DVD (4+ gig) down to about 800 meg. Almost small enough to fit on a standard cd and the quality is pretty good (using DivX 5).
...clearly states what you can (and mostly what you cannot) do. No backup copies, sorry Charlie.
