You are correct there.

The studios have chosen to develop technology over artistic craft [similar to audio] and this is the result. Greed plays a role when the bottom line is such a major consideration in production development and distribution.

We are also fortunate that the technology [not all bad :)] of DVD provides access to many foreign and independent films that see little general theatrical distribution.
