In his interview with Hitchcock, Truffaut asked him about that appearance. Hitch replied that he had foregone all his usual culinary pleasures and strenuously dieted for about a year when he was preparing "Lifeboat". The fact that the change in his appearance inspired his best cameo was icing on the cake. Hitch added that much to his surprise, he received letters after the release of the film asking questions like how did "Reduco Obesity Slayer" work...how much did it cost...did he know where it could be bought...was he selling it himself! Hitch finished his comments on the "Lifeboat" cameo by saying that once he resumed his former rich foods and fine wines, the weight came right back.
