and it is very good!
Mind you, not the almost perfect film Hero is, but that would be too much to ask for. They both were written at the same time and HOFD shows it could have used a bit of tightening here and there. Still, it is powerful and bears comparison in quality to Crouching Dragon, Hidden Tiger (?) (I just can't remember the name of that damn movie!).
Both lead actors are wonderful as is the obiquitous female star. Many of the landscapes truly are breathtaking, as are the martial arts fights and their direction. But, what "makes" this film is the comment it makes on war and, I know this is going to sound waaay corny, the very real depiction of the human price of war.
Few movies with such a sober topic can leave the viewer feeling hopeful about our bloody race, but it succeeds.
All the while, the action and the pacing keep you entertained---unlike so many "serious" European and Russian films.
Four out of five stars.
Follow Ups:
...and I liked it much better than Hero.
I saw it two nites ago, and was not too impressed. Felt forced and staged. I think the 'formula' has worn thin. Crouching Tiger.., Hero, Spring, summer fall and spring, etc got there first and were fresh and innovative. Its kind of like the slasher horror movies, where Nightmare on Elm street sort of set the trend to be followered by a whole series of 'me-too'.
House of Flying Daggers didn't even approach the fighting sequences of Hero or CTHD, even the story was shallow and juvenile.
My 2cents.
Region 3 Korean 2-disc EDKO edition (DTS-ES 6.1 full bit-rate soundtrack). If it's half as good as Hero, it will be well worth it.
Its not quite as good as Hero, but its very good nonetheless.
I got the HK Edco vewrsion when it came out a while back.

the 2-disc EDKO version is worth a look. The soundtrack is THE version to get (full bit-rate DTS ES 6.1) and the picture quality is better. The single disc EDKO version was a PAL-to-NTSC transfer.
Thanks Tin I'll check it out...I bought the soundtrack CD a couple of weeks ago and like it alot...super recording also. You are one of the kings of the film AA.

I am THE kingfish of this pond, and don't you forget it.
More seriously, (blush, stutter...) thanks.
